How to Navigate Foreign Universities Application Process Like a Pro

How to Navigate Foreign Universities Application Process

More than six years ago, my friend James fell victim to the “Japa” syndrome. He committed a great deal of time and money to get accepted to a master’s program at an institution outside of Nigeria. The vast array of options and possibilities that come with studying in the US, UK, and Canada are quite alluring to many Nigerians.

Furthermore, James has undoubtedly fallen for the “Japa” dream. Unfortunately, over the past six years, James submitted more than 40 applications and received as many rejections. As he told me about his troubles, I saw some very preventable errors, such as missing deadlines or sending in incomplete applications.

Read this article so you don’t end up like James.

7 Simple Steps to Navigate Foreign Universities Application Process Like a Pro

Foreign universities application process can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategy, you can simplify the process and increase your chances of success. From selecting the right university to securing scholarships and submitting a strong application, every step requires careful planning. Whether you’re pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies, I aim to walk you through a stress-free experience.

Let’s get started on your journey to studying abroad!

1. Decide What to Study

When you are applying to foreign universities, selecting what you want to study will be the first decision you will have to make. Your choice will affect your study career, future career, and overall study experience. To make the best logical decision, start by evaluating your interests, strengths, and future career plans.

Reflect on fields you are interested in and whether they align with career trends and industry demands in the employment market. Research study courses at various foreign universities and compare their curriculum, accreditations, and specialization courses. Job prospects for certain studies are better in specific countries, so think about post-graduation career prospects.

If you are still in doubt regarding your desired field of study, you may seek the advice of university academic advisors or professional consulting services like SEA-FAJ Consults. They can guide you in matching your aspirations and abilities to the right programs and schools.

2. Decide When You Want to Study

Here, we are discussing timelines. Some universities have multiple intake sessions, and getting the right one will impact your admission chances, visa application, and budget planning. Most universities have two major intakes: Fall (September/October) and Spring (January/February). Some institutions even have Summer (May/June) intakes.

The most desired usually is the Fall intake, with greater program options, scholarship opportunities, and opportunities to engage in more opportunities for internships and employment. The less competitive Spring intake can limit its courses to a degree but has flexibility for the student who will need extra preparation time.

When scheduling your start date, remember that you need to include application times, visa times, and funding.

Ensure that you leave enough time to organize the documents required, sit for English tests like IELTS or TOEFL, and apply for scholarships. Ideally, you need to start searching for courses and destinations one year in advance so that you have a one-year preparation period. Next, start setting up your financial plans after the end of your third month within your one-year preparation period.

Start looking for scholarships if you do not have the financial means to achieve your dreams. Start applying to the universities of your choice in the sixth month. Apply for as many universities as possible to increase the chances of getting in.

Make preparations for your visas, travel, and accommodation during the final three months.

3. Decide Where You Want to Study

The country you choose will influence the quality of education, career opportunities, and overall experience. To make the best decision, consider factors such as university rankings, cost of living, tuition fees, job opportunities, and post-study work options. If you’re looking for world-class education and career growth, countries like the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia offer top-ranked universities and strong job markets.

However, if affordability is a priority, destinations like Germany, Norway, and Malaysia provide quality education with lower tuition fees.

At SEA-FAJ Consults, we will help you navigate your options and choose the best study destination based on your academic goals and financial capacity. By carefully selecting where you want to study, you set the foundation for a successful university application and a rewarding international education experience.

4. Write Applications to Multiple Universities

Managing multiple applications can be overwhelming. However, applying to multiple universities increases your chances of admission and gives you more options to choose from. This is how you can do it.

Firstly, list the universities you’re applying to, including their admission dates, all their required documents, and fees. This process will help you to stay organized along the way. While most required documents, like your academic records, remain the same, you should tailor your statement of purpose and recommendation letters to align with each university’s values and programs.

Tailoring your application process to specific universities increases your chances of standing out. Many universities use centralized application portals like the Common App or UCAS. If your target schools accept such platforms, you can save time by filling out a single application and sending it to multiple institutions.

5. Financial Considerations and Scholarships

How can I apply to foreign universities?

Studying abroad can be expensive. The high cost of school fees, accommodation, and feeding can be a dream killer. However, scholarships can significantly reduce your financial burden.

Many universities, governments, and private organizations offer scholarships to international students based on academic merit, leadership potential, and financial need. Some well-known options include the Fulbright Program, Chevening Scholarships, DAAD, Erasmus, and university-specific grants.

Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements before applying. Applying for scholarships requires much effort, but securing one can ease your study-abroad journey and help you focus on academic success.

6. Pass your Language Level

To study an English-taught program at a university abroad, you’ll first need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency. Most universities accept one of the following English language certificates: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, C1 advanced.

If you are already based in an English-speaking country like Nigeria, you will encounter few or no issues.

7. Apply for a Student Visa

The visa application process is the last and final step in navigating your way into your dream university. Upon receiving your admission letter, begin your visa application immediately. Different countries have different requirements for visa applications.

The majority of countries ask for financial proof, medical tests, language proficiency, and an interview.
